Aitchison College Lahore and Yadavindra School Patiala

The illustrious Aitchison College at Lahore was established in 1886 by the British. It aimed to be the primary school for the sons of chiefs and native gentlemen from all over Punjab and Maharajadhiraja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala and his son, Maharajadhiraja Yadavindra Singh, are both alumni of this prestigious institution. After India’s independence in August 1947 and the partition of Punjab, an appeal was made to Maharajadhiraja Yadavindra Singh by the parents of the boys studying at Aitchison College. They urged him to realize his dream of starting a public school for all children irrespective of their caste, creed, colour, caste or clan. His Highness subscribed wholeheartedly to the idea, and Yadavindra Public School laid down its roots at Patiala.

His Highness invited Rai Bahadur Dhani Ram Kapila, the Headmaster of Aitchison College, to be the first Headmaster of Yadavindra Public School, the first public school of Patiala. He also formed a six-member committee, which along with eminent educationists, selected Yadavindra Stadium as the site for the classrooms and Bhupindra Kothi for the boarding house. The school started functioning on 2nd February 1948 with a strength of twenty-one students and nine teachers.
